Hendrik Willem Van Loon was born on January 14, 1882 in the Netherlands (Father also named Hendrik Willem). He graduated from Harvard University and did his doctoral work in Munich. He is best noted for his lively histories and biographies for children (but much enjoyed by adults too) decorated with his own drawings. His best known works include The Story of Mankind (winner of the first Newberry Medal) first published in 1921 and still making updated appearances in bookstores, Thomas Jefferson, Johann Sebastian Bach, The Story of America (1927), Tolerance, Our War, Van Loon's Lives, The Story of the Bible, and The Life and Times of Rembrandt, all told he wrote over thirty books.
